Working with Third-Party Tools

Vertica is typically deployed within an ecosystem of integrated technologies that include tools for visualizing, analyzing, and managing the data stored in the Vertica database. Major technology and solution providers across industries partner with us to ensure compatibility with Vertica and coordinate ongoing development.

Types of Third-Party Tools

Vertica technology partners offer a wide range of specialized tools that integrate with Vertica. Most tools fall into one or more of the following categories (click icon for description):

  • visualizationIcon
Tools that present data visually in graphs and spreadsheets, often for purposes of business intelligence (BI).
  • dataMovementIcon
Tools that perform tasks such as the following:

    • Extraction, transformation, and loading (ETL)
    • Change data capture (CDC) and replication
    • Merging and filtering of live data streams, as in the Internet of Things (IoT)
  • analysisIcon
Tools that apply analytics to derive actionable information from data. Examples include online transaction processing (OLAP), predictive analytics, data mining, and statistical analysis.
  • designIcon
Visual tools for SQL development and schema design.
  • securityicon
Tools that control access to data using mechanisms like authentication, authorization, and encryption.
  • middlewareIcon
Intermediate software layer that manages interaction between a database or operating system and an application. Application servers are examples of middleware.

Connecting to Third-Party Tools

Vertica supports industry-standard drivers, such as ODBC and JDBC, for connecting client applications to Vertica.

Vertica client software, including the drivers, is available for download on the Client Drivers page. Instructions for installing the client software are provided in the Vertica documentation.

Vertica drivers are forward compatible. Later versions of Vertica can still support clients that use earlier versions of the drivers. For more information, see Client Driver and Server Version Compatibility in the Vertica documentation.

Resources for Technology Partners

Documentation, videos, and other information about products that integrate with Vertica are posted in the Big Data and Analytics Community.

Resources include the following:

  • Connection Guides
Connection guides provide basic instructions for connecting a specific version of a third party tool to a specific version of Vertica. To find a connection guide, search for the name of the vendor in the Vertica Knowledge Base.
  • Tips and Techniques documents
These documents provide information for tuning and optimizing the connection between a specific version of a third party tool and a specific version of Vertica. To find a tips and techniques document, search for the vendor name in the Vertica Knowledge Base.
  • QuickStart examples
QuickStart examples are sample applications created using a third party product connected to a Vertica database. QuickStarts may be sample BI dashboards or sample ETL or IoT applications.

QuickStarts are posted for download on the Vertica Marketplace under the QuickStart Examples category. Deployment instructions and a short video are included with each QuickStart app. The QuickStart deployment documents are also posted in the. The QuickStart videos are also posted on the HPE Developer YouTube channel.

NOTE: You will find a list of all the documentation for third party tools on the Technology Partner Integrations page on The list is ordered alphabetically by vendor name.
