This document explains how to connect Dundas BI, a feature-rich data exploration tool, to your Vertica database.
Software Versions Tested
Vertica engineers have tested Vertica 8.0.x and Vertica 8.1.x with Dundas BI 4 on Windows.

Dundas BI Overview
Dundas BI provides a comprehensive set of tools that allow you to view, analyze, and transform your data using comprehensive business intelligence capabilities.
You can connect and integrate Dundas BI with Vertica in real time and on any device from desktop to mobile. You can run Dundas BI on premises or in a cloud environment.
Dundas allows you to:
- Create interactive and customizable dashboards and reports.
- Run ad-hoc queries.
- Analyze your data and performance.
Installing Dundas BI

Before you install Dundas BI, review the Dundas BI System Requirements.
Dundas BI is a web-based server application that requires IIS and access to Microsoft SQL Server for storing application data. The IIS server and SQL Server database should be up and running before you try to connect.
Install the Client Driver
Dundas BI uses the Vertica native connector to connect to your Vertica database.
To install the native connector in your existing Dundas BI environment, follow these steps:
- Download and install the Windows ADO.NET 8.0 driver on your Dundas BI server machine from: https://my.vertica.com/download/vertica/client-drivers/.
- Restart the IIS Server.
Connect Dundas BI to Vertica
Follow these steps in order to connect Dundas BI to Vertica via the native connector :
After you install Dundas BI (Installing Dundas BI), navigate to the generated web link for Dundas BIWebsite, which is something like: http://myDundasServer:8000/.
If you have an account, enter your login credentials, and skip to step 5.
If you do not have an account, click Register.
- Enter the following information:
- Account name
- Any message for the Dundas administrators.
Dundas sends you an email when your account has been approved.
The Getting Started window appears.
The following graphic identifies functional areas of Dundas BI that you should familiarize yourself with.
To create the connection to Vertica, first click the Home button in the upper-left corner of the Getting Started window. The Welcome Home screen appears.
Click Connect to data. The New Data Connector window opens.
- From the Data Provider drop-down menu, select Vertica database.
Enter the following information:
- Login credentials
- Host IP address
- Database name
- Connection pooling parameters
- Connection settings parameters
- Session settings parameters
- Click Test connection to verify that the connection works.
- After you verify that the connection works, click the checkmark at the bottom-right of the screen.
Work with the Vertica Data
Follow these steps to select the data you want to work with:
- To return to the Welcome Home page, click the Home icon on the upper-left of the screen.
Click Explore the data. The Metric Sets window opens.
A metric set is an object that allows you to work with your Vertica data. You can define measures, dimensions, filters, sorting, and hierarchy, and sort and tranform your data. You create a visualization of that data using the charactertistics specified in your metric set.
Click Use an existing data structure. A list of objects in the schema displays.
Select the table you want to work with and click the checkmark. You can see the details of that table:
Now you can view, transform, and make visualizations of the data in your Vertica database.
Dundas BI does not support the following data types. Dundas BI does not display data of these types and may display an error:
Dundas BI rounds off some decimal values as follows:
- 79228162514264.337593543950335 to 79228162514264.34
- 1234.56789 to 1234.57
Dundas BI truncates the decimal part of some decimal values:
- 7.9228162514264337593543950335 to 7.92
- 7922816251426433759354395.0335 to 7922816251426433759354395.03
Dundas BI truncates some floating-point values as follows:
- 1.000001 to 1.00
- 122.333444455555 to 122.33
Dundas BI does not support the following FLOAT data type values:
